Nyakabanda is another recently new school facility that serves 14 teachers and 820 students. The classrooms are large and light and yet they are already showing quite a lot of wear. Windows are already broken, paint has been scrapped off in places, doors do not close properly, and bits of rubbish strewn about the classroom show that there has been little effort put in to keep the school nice.
The students do have quite a large area to run around for recess, but it is completely bare without even a goal post rising out of the hard dirt. Initially, the Principal appeared as though he could have cared less about the WSDP, however since he attended the Servant Leadership course he has shown much more enthusiasm and belief in the program.
Baseline surveys showed there is plenty of work to be done in empowering these teachers. One of the lessons observed demonstrated that the teacher was basically disregarded by the students. The elderly teacher spoke to his class in a voice barely above a whisper while the students continued to carry on their own conversations. After the teacher wrote an exercise up on the board, he was lucky if a student glanced up to read what he had written, let alone any of them actually doing the exercise.
There is a long way to go, but we are excited to see the changes that will take place in the hearts and minds of the individuals at Nyakabanda.
