Ecole Primaire de Ayabaraya

This is a very rural school mainly made up of children whose parents are subsistence farmers without any external source of income.  The vast majority of the parents are illiterate since they have had no education themselves.   While the parents want their kids to have the education they were never able to receive, the hardships of their lifestyle means that the need to survive often overrides the opportunity to attend class, thus many students miss class because they are forced to stay home to help with chores.

Missing class results in students not passing exams and therefore needing to repeat the grade.  Drop out is also a big problem for this school, and of the 1,232 students that attend, only six students went on to high school last year.   The WSDP has been well received by the Principal and 16 classroom teachers.   After attending the first week of the Servant Leadership training, the Principal has already begun recognizing the need to change her leadership style.  Rather than feeling like she has to run the show by herself, she has restructured the leadership of the school to empower her administration.
