Eastern Rwanda

Rwanda's eastern plains are a mix of small lakes, rivers, wide open vistas, rolling hills and the Akagera National Park. In 1999 Akagera's total area was decreased by almost two-thirds to accommodate returning refugees. Akagera does not compare to other major parks in East Africa in land mass or variety of large mammals but it is still a wonderful place to enjoy solitude and the wonders of God's creation.

The entrance to the park from a high ridge gives beautiful sweepings views of its 90,000 hectares of lakes, rivers, woodland and Savanna. The lakes have some of Africa's highest concentrations of hippos, a number of crocodiles and over 425 bird species. There are also still several species of large mammals including elephant, giraffe, buffalo, and antelope. People who have traveled in other East African parks will enjoy the ability to travel long distances without seeing another vehicle, or have the uncomfortable feeling that they are in a zoo.

Other sites in Eastern Rwanda include the powerful Rusumo falls, Lake Muhazi, and the long horned Ankole cattle. The towns of Eastern Rwanda-Kibungo, Rwamagana, and Nyagatara-are mostly unimpressive places to stay on your way to somewhere else. Although Akagera is the only major attraction, it's well worth a visit.

The frontier feeling here will give you yet another appreciation for the diversity of this tiny country.
