Project Update 2010-08-09

August - September Construction Update:

With so much activity-taking place in August, our regular monthly project update was delayed, however in this update, we combined both August and September.

August: We organized and shipped our 40 foot container to Rwanda. This was an incredible effort from the business community, individual donors, volunteers and Global Emergency Missions Society (GEMS) who all came together to make this project work.

Some key contributions came from PJ White Hardwoods, donating 320 sheets of Arborite, North Enderby Timber who donated 40 sheets of plywood to make our study carrels and Elyk Woodcrafting in providing sizable discounts on over 160 sheets plywood & MDF. On the construction front, Triton Construction provided valuable and much needed power tools and funds. For our growing campus, Grumpy's Landscaping provided irrigation line and landscaping tools. They themselves will be heading to Rwanda in February 2011. We are incredibly thankful to businesses whom came along side and supported our container project. We are thankful to individuals who provided many items: lawnmower, tools & hardware, new supplies and literally boxes upon boxes of excellent equipment. Just as important was the ongoing help from GEMS warehouse in not only organizing the actual shipment to Rwanda but providing the space to store all the supplies. Finally our volunteers, who came out for 9 hours to lift, pull and heave all day and finally push the door closed. This was an incredible effort!

On the construction side in Rwanda.

August saw 95% of efforts into breaking ground on the first science / computer lab building.  The crew poured the floors, placed door frames and windows and completed the brickwork to the ring beam.

Other activities in August had the crew connecting various walk ways to buildings throughout the campus.

In the month of September, trusses and purlins were welded into place on the Outdoor Auditorium and the finishing brickwork of the gable end completed.

The boys were also able to pour a section of pathway down from the “outdoor auditorium” and connect to the Library.

The shell of the librarian desk in place in the now painted library where glass in the
windows is installed.  Now we need to assemble book shelves and student study stations.

Up next in October:

  • Painting of ring beams on all the buildings of the secondary section
  • Assembly of bookshelves and student study carols
  • Hopefully planting grass if the rains arrive properly
