The two main buildings that had steady gains through the month of January were the Outdoor Auditorium and the Sanitation Block. A temporary change and shower facility was also built for the construction crew.
Outdoor AuditoriumThe foundation and retaining walls were completed along with rebar-reinforced columns. A ring beam that sits above the retaining wall was formed and poured to ensure the strength of a foundation wall that is over 2.5 meters at its highest point will be secure. It’s a site to see these massive boulders that make up the foundational walls trucked into the site and slowly make their way to sizable rock material through the chiseling and hammering handy work of the construction crew. The last major piece completed on the Outdoor Auditorium was the side entry walkway that will serve as the main entrance into the auditorium.Sanitation BlockThe Sanitation Block building began this month. The site layout was drawn and the crew started the manual process of digging down to original stable soil. At some points this means digging down 2 meters. Digging the trenches for the foundational walls was completed and ¾ of laying the foundational rock was also complete. Covered Change and ShowerThe last achievement for the month of January was a covered shower and changing quarters for the 8 full time member construction staff and 10-15 casual labourers. As this is not typically built on construction sites, I asked Jeffery Komant why such a structure was needed, his answer: “On the Wellspring Academy project, it is not just the end product that counts. While we hope to deliver facilities that would be great anywhere in the world, how we treat our employees during the construction process speaks just as much about who we are as an organization, and about the God whom we serve. The temporary construction staff change room and showers is just one way to respect and value the people who are quite literally building Rwanda’s future one brick at a time.” Upcoming for next month
