There is currently a window of opportunity to help Rwanda overcome its huge educational gap and accomplish its goal of overcoming extreme poverty and transitioning towards a service based economy by the year 2020. Today Rwandans are still working to overcome the legacy of the 1994 genocide. Quality education is a key to this process. Yet many children learn in overcrowded classrooms with 60 to 100 students. Teachers lack certification, ongoing training, resources, and adequate pay. Morale is low and absenteeism is rampant. It’s an overwhelming situation. But there is hope. Wellspring is working with Rwandans to educate and empower a new generation following the 1994 genocide. Since 2004, Wellspring has offered training to hundreds of teachers, established a Professional Development Centre, developed a model Christian school with 350 students called the Wellspring Academy, supported the growth of the 800 member Association of Committed Teachers (ACT) Rwanda, and launched an innovative solution for school transformation called Whole School Development. Learn more about these initiatives, what we are working toward in our Vision 2012, and how you can get involved. |
